The architectural program was begun in 1975 as the Department of Architectural Engineering, encompassing what is now the School of Architecture and Architectural Engineering (SAAE). The SAAE was inaugurated in 2005, and consists of the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering. The Department of Architecture has been transformed from a 4-year program into 5-year program, and it became the first program in Korea to receive architectural accreditation by Korea Architectural Accrediting Board (KAAB) in 2007. We have been recognized as one of the leading architectural programs in Korea and have evolved a diverse array of special programs, and have begun to gain international reputation.

The University of Seoul is the only university in Korea that is fully funded and supported by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, and hence, it is distinguished by its commitment to civic values and its work towards a dynamic and sustainable urban civilization. We are both an essential engine and beneficiary of this wider institutional mission and the Urban Sciences Initiative.
